Checking website’s speed with PageSpeed insights tool
Automobile experts know best that customers choose a car based on its speed. When it comes to a website, most of the visitors, similarly, care for page speed over design and if you let them wait for too long, it would causes them to bounce from your website.
Knowing that page speed matters, let’s go a step further in analysing how Page Speed Insight can help you.
What’s PageSpeed Insight?
“PageSpeed Insight” is an alternative tool for testing your page speed and was developed by Google. The current update includes actual user data from Chrome User Experience report to maximise the effectiveness of the website.
There are two indicators Google use to awards points to as it relates to page speed.
- First Contentful Paint (FCP) is the duration any actual content has been loaded on the page. Content can be any text, images, layout and etc.
- DOM Content Loaded (DCL) is the time taken for HTML files to be fully loaded on the page.
How to use PageSpeed Insight
On Google’s PageSpeed Insight page, you will be required to fill in URL website and the system would quickly measure your page speed. It will score your website and categorise it into three categories – Fast, Average and Slow.
The advantage of Google’s PSI is not only is it easy-to-use, but it also suggests what you need to do to optimise the website’s efficiency such as resizing images, compressing files, creating a user-friendly Interface or assigning cache to browser.
Unfortunately, some website cannot be measured by this PSI tool due to inadequate data, but you are able to use Lighthouse in Chrome DevTools as an alternative option.
